Los videojuegos son un tipo de arte. Un medio que sirve para plasmar historias, presentar personajes, envolvernos en mundos, ambientes, vistas, sonidos; en fin, los videojuegos son un tipo de arte que nos permite adentrarnos en un mundo e interactuar con él a través de su jugabilidad.
En este medio de los videojuegos, no es raro ver cómo surgen juegos que traen consigo un mensaje. Mensaje que nos transmite diversas emociones y que conecta con nosotros. Y aquí, en 2024, nos llega un juego con estas intenciones de conectar con nosotros: dicho juego es Neva.
Neva es un juego desarrollado por el estudio español Nómada Studio, creadores de Gris, un juego que, en su momento, cautivó con su hermoso diseño artístico, visuales, música e historia que contaba. ¿Es Neva una propuesta a la altura de la anterior entrega del estudio? Veamos en este review.
Historia
La historia de Neva se centra en su personaje principal, Alba, y su lobo, Neva. En un evento trágico que ocurre al inicio del juego, la madre de Neva es asesinada por una fuerza de oscuridad que se apodera del bosque. Es ahí donde comienza la historia de Neva, con nuestros personajes en la época de verano. Cada estación del año es uno de los capítulos del juego y finaliza en primavera del siguiente año.
En cada capítulo vemos a la loba Neva crecer, no solo en tamaño y habilidades, sino también en el vínculo entre ambos personajes, algo muy aparente en los diversos acontecimientos que van sucediendo en la historia. A medida que avanzamos en la historia y las temporadas del año, vamos viendo cómo una entidad de oscuridad se apodera del mundo poco a poco, quitándole la belleza y el color a los paisajes en los que navegamos. Esta misma oscuridad es la que causó la tragedia al inicio del juego y sirve como el antagonista principal.
Es una hermosa historia que, magistralmente, nos transmite el amor sincero entre estos dos personajes. Desde la primera escena, la ternura de Alba con su loba Neva se siente como si fueran madre e hija. Esto, junto a la gran banda sonora, nos transmite las emociones que los autores quieren y ayuda aún más a adentrarnos en una historia que, a simple vista, es sencilla, pero a la vez muy emotiva. Tengan un pañuelo a mano porque las lágrimas pueden ser incontenibles en este juego. Un apartado excelentemente logrado que demuestra que no es necesaria una historia compleja para atraparnos y mantenernos interesados de principio a fin.
Gameplay
A nivel jugable, Neva es similar a su predecesor. Es un juego de aventura lineal, con algunos elementos ligeros de plataformas, puzles y una pequeña dosis de combate. En el juego anterior del estudio, Gris, una de las críticas prevalentes fue la limitada interactividad y la simpleza de su jugabilidad.
Con Neva, el estudio ha tratado de expandir esta jugabilidad agregando una movilidad más fluida a nuestro personaje: doble salto, un sistema de combate, «dodge roll», en fin, una clara evolución de lo que fue Gris, sin desviarse mucho de la fórmula y agregando elementos que ayudan a mejorar la interacción que tenía el juego original.
También tendremos algunos jefes al final de cada capítulo que pondrán a prueba nuestras habilidades de combate y añaden un poco de desafío adicional a la campaña. Además, encontraremos un tipo de coleccionable en forma de flor que nos dará una escena opcional muy bonita en el último capítulo del juego, si la encontramos, claro está, porque la misma está oculta. Es un juego que expande sobre su predecesor y agrega lo suficiente para hacer más interesante la jugabilidad.
Apartado gráfico y artístico
Una de las grandes fortalezas del estudio es su apartado gráfico y artístico. ¿El hombre clave? Conrad Roset. Uno de los fundadores de Nómada Studio, junto a Adrián Cuevas y Roger Mendoza. Roset es la piedra angular de Nómada Studio y lo que les da el toque diferenciador a sus juegos.
Conrad Roset es el director creativo de Neva, pero también es un artista muy respetado a nivel internacional debido a sus grandes ilustraciones de “Musas” y su dominio de las acuarelas. Su estilo se traslada a la perfección en Neva, un juego que, con solo ver una toma, nos damos cuenta de que se trata del mismo estudio de Gris y del mismo artista.
Todos los paisajes, personajes, animaciones y colores son una obra de arte en movimiento. Realmente, Neva se ve como un retrato o una pintura en movimiento. Esto, combinado con la creatividad del artista, da como resultado uno de los juegos más hermosos de 2024, no solo a nivel visual, sino también a nivel artístico.
Cada movimiento de los personajes, cada nivel, cada plataforma está hecho a mano, con atención al más mínimo detalle, y esta calidad prevalece de inicio a fin del juego. El excelente uso de lápiz y acuarela nos enamora visualmente. Su uso de colores nos transmite emociones y sentimientos. Sus paisajes nos adentran en el mundo de Neva, como si viviéramos junto a sus personajes. Todo esto, manteniendo la coherencia y la armonía visual; nada se siente fuera de lugar en este mundo. Es, sin duda alguna, el punto más fuerte del juego y uno digno de un fuerte aplauso. Neva es el juego más hermoso que jugarás este año. Seas amante o no de los trazos de pinceles o la acuarela, el juego constantemente te enamorará con lo desplegado en la pantalla.
Música
La banda sonora de Neva es otro apartado majestuoso. La música del juego está a cargo de la banda Berlinist, la misma que compuso las canciones para Gris. Acá, Marco Albano, Luigi Gervasi y Gemma Gamarra nos transmiten una cantidad de emociones y sentimientos con cada nota de piano, con cada cuerda y con cada una de las composiciones que forman parte de la banda sonora de este juego.
Miedo, acción, tristeza, alegría, esperanza, todo es transmitido por las piezas de Berlinist a lo largo de la duración de Neva. Es el complemento perfecto para la bella dirección artística y eleva la obra de forma considerable, ya que no solo te enamora con lo que presenta visualmente, sino también con lo que escuchas. Otro de los apartados fuertes del juego y un excelente trabajo por parte de Berlinist y sus integrantes.
Conclusión
Con Neva, Nómada Studio demuestra que son un equipo con una visión clara y consistente de lo que persiguen. No solo buscan hacer juegos por el simple hecho de hacerlos, sino que los crean porque les apasiona, y esa pasión se ve en cada onza y centímetro de Neva.
Neva no es un juego pretencioso, es un juego honesto, con un mensaje muy bonito en la historia que nos cuenta. Belleza que no solo vemos en su narrativa, sino también en lo visual, como si esto sirviera de extensión para transmitirnos la misma belleza de su mensaje.
Neva es la demostración clara de que no necesitamos altos presupuestos o una historia supercompleja para transmitir emociones y conectar con las personas. A través de su excelente dirección artística, el excelente uso de colores y una banda sonora majestuosa, Neva nos cautiva y nos mantiene enganchados hasta la conclusión de su narrativa.
Y aunque su apartado jugable no es lo más complejo o elaborado del mercado, es una clara evolución de lo que han hecho en el pasado y complementa muy bien todo el paquete. Neva es un juego que nadie puede perderse, eso sí, tengan sus pañuelos a mano, las lágrimas son parte de la experiencia.
